Here at Southend University Hospital we strive to provide high quality care for every patient, every time.

We would be nothing without our staff. So it goes without saying that when it comes to recruiting new team members, we're looking for the best. We encourage staff to be innovative, to challenge the "as is" and to always put patients first.

We want staff who will live our trust values every day.

Care with compassion, Working together, Professional and accountable

This is an exciting time to join us. The three NHS trusts that currently run Broomfield, Southend and Basildon hospitals are planning to become a new single NHS organisation by mid-2019.

All three hospitals will continue to provide the services our patients use the most. These include outpatient appointments, children’s services and day-case surgery.  All three hospitals will continue to provide 24/7 A&E and maternity services.

By working as one team we will provide the same high standard of care and services for all of our 1.2m local residents. Using the same equipment, processes and IT systems means services will run more smoothly.  Single leadership, standards and new structures will speed up decision making.  Combined corporate services will reduce duplication and cut running costs. This means more money for front-line services and faster improvements.

Attracting new talent is key to our future and the scale of our organisation will give far  more career, training and development opportunities for all our staff.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Assistant Practitioner (AP) within the The Surgical Assessment Unit/Chalkwell Ward.

***Candidates MUST hold a Foundation Degree in a health related subject or be due to qualify in the Spring/Summer in order to be considered***

Chalkwell ward is a very busy Emergency Surgical Assessment Unit, which is about to expand to 19 in patient beds and an additional Assessment bay that holds 6-8 patients. We take emergency surgical admissions, referred by GP'S, or A/E, and the over flow for Orthopaedics. Within the busy times we may also take patients with acute medical conditions. Over the next few months SAU will be incorporating some short 23 hour stay patients who require surgery

You will be expected to work autonomously within the clearly defined boundaries of the Assistant Practitioner role. The post holder is expected to have the knowledge and skills to work at the expected level of professional competence within agreed protocols responsible for assessing, supporting and implementing appropriate care interventions in meeting the patient’s needs.

Southend is a lively and vibrant seaside town, most famous for having the world’s longest pier. It boasts excellent road and rail communications – central London is less than an hour away by train and the newly-expanded airport is introducing new routes all the time. The town is renowned for its wide variety of cultural and sporting opportunities, with top-class theatres, arts and music festivals and water sports. It also prides itself on offering a buzzing nightlife with clubs, excellent restaurants and bistros. There are outstanding shops as well as plenty of parks and open spaces.
