Here at Southend University Hospital we strive to provide high quality care for every patient, every time.

We would be nothing without our staff. So it goes without saying that when it comes to recruiting new team members, we're looking for the best. We encourage staff to be innovative, to challenge the "as is" and to always put patients first.

We want staff who will live our trust values every day.

Care with compassion, Working together, Professional and accountable

This is an exciting time to join us. The three NHS trusts that currently run Broomfield, Southend and Basildon hospitals are planning to become a new single NHS organisation by mid-2019.

All three hospitals will continue to provide the services our patients use the most. These include outpatient appointments, children’s services and day-case surgery.  All three hospitals will continue to provide 24/7 A&E and maternity services.

By working as one team we will provide the same high standard of care and services for all of our 1.2m local residents. Using the same equipment, processes and IT systems means services will run more smoothly.  Single leadership, standards and new structures will speed up decision making.  Combined corporate services will reduce duplication and cut running costs. This means more money for front-line services and faster improvements.

Attracting new talent is key to our future and the scale of our organisation will give far  more career, training and development opportunities for all our staff.

Registered Nurse - Surgical Assessment Unit

We are looking to welcome a new Registered Nurse into our Surgical Assessment Unit on Chalkwell Ward.

The Surgical Assessment Unit is a fast paced and exciting place to work. The surgical assessment unit (SAU) is the gateway into surgery. The unit takes patients for assessment for the surgical teams from A&E and GP referrals and is a combination of ward beds and ambulatory patients managed through the ward area as well as the Emergency Surgical Ambulatory Clinic (ESAC) which is also situated on the unit. This is a great area to hone acute care and assessment skills. The nurses in SAU are experienced in stabilising new patients, preparing patients for surgery and post op care. Due to the variety of patients cared for in SAU there is support from a number of different nurse specialists including the surgical navigators (who co-ordinate the GP referrals and manage ESAC), stoma nurses, urology specialists, trauma nurses to name but a few

The work load is very varied and interesting, no two days are the same. Following assessment the patients are either treated and discharged, warded or admitted to the unit for a maximum of 3 days.

Southend-On-Sea is an exciting place to live, work and enjoy life. Just under an hour from London and Europe (either by rail or air), Southend and the surrounding area is vibrant and cosmopolitan.
