Here at Southend University Hospital we strive to provide high quality care for every patient, every time.

We would be nothing without our staff. So it goes without saying that when it comes to recruiting new team members, we're looking for the best. We encourage staff to be innovative, to challenge the "as is" and to always put patients first.

We want staff who will live our trust values every day.

Care with compassion, Working together, Professional and accountable

This is an exciting time to join us. The three NHS trusts that currently run Broomfield, Southend and Basildon hospitals are planning to become a new single NHS organisation by mid-2019.

All three hospitals will continue to provide the services our patients use the most. These include outpatient appointments, children’s services and day-case surgery.  All three hospitals will continue to provide 24/7 A&E and maternity services.

By working as one team we will provide the same high standard of care and services for all of our 1.2m local residents. Using the same equipment, processes and IT systems means services will run more smoothly.  Single leadership, standards and new structures will speed up decision making.  Combined corporate services will reduce duplication and cut running costs. This means more money for front-line services and faster improvements.

Attracting new talent is key to our future and the scale of our organisation will give far  more career, training and development opportunities for all our staff.

We are looking for a Locum Consultant Physician in General Medicine to join our Medicine Directorate and take responsibility for our newly developed Outlier team.

Our Outlier Team will be responsible for delivering high end acute medical care to patients promptly with discharge back to the community quickly from our Benfleet and Paglesham wards. If you desire quick patient turnover with a variety of acute medical problems to care for, then this is an ideal job for you.

In addition we offer you the opportunity to pursue a special interest within other medical specialities as well the opportunity to be involved in our transformation programme across Southend, Mid Essex, Basildon and Thurrock.

The post-holder will provide 8.5 sessions of Direct Clinical Care and will have 1.5 sessions available for Supporting Professional Activities plus 2 optional additional programmed activities to develop a special interest of your choice.

There is no on-call commitment attached to this post. The shift based working pattern will be Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm with weekends as agreed with the successful candidate at the time of appointment.

The Medicine Directorate are proud to be able to offer a personalised supportive induction programme for all newly appointed Consultants which is tailored to candidate’s needs. This includes a welcome tour, time to complete statutory/mandatory training, time to integrate into the team at a pace to suit the candidate and a tailored programme in line with any additional requests from the candidate. We include regular reviews and opportunities to flex the induction programme as required.

You could be building your future in one of the best locations in Britain. Southend is a vibrant seaside town offering a relaxed lifestyle, with a busy local airport and rapid and frequent transport links to London, the Essex countryside and beyond. We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
