Here at Southend University Hospital we strive to provide high quality care for every patient, every time.

We would be nothing without our staff. So it goes without saying that when it comes to recruiting new team members, we're looking for the best. We encourage staff to be innovative, to challenge the "as is" and to always put patients first.

We want staff who will live our trust values every day.

Care with compassion, Working together, Professional and accountable

This is an exciting time to join us. The three NHS trusts that currently run Broomfield, Southend and Basildon hospitals are planning to become a new single NHS organisation by mid-2019.

All three hospitals will continue to provide the services our patients use the most. These include outpatient appointments, children’s services and day-case surgery.  All three hospitals will continue to provide 24/7 A&E and maternity services.

By working as one team we will provide the same high standard of care and services for all of our 1.2m local residents. Using the same equipment, processes and IT systems means services will run more smoothly.  Single leadership, standards and new structures will speed up decision making.  Combined corporate services will reduce duplication and cut running costs. This means more money for front-line services and faster improvements.

Attracting new talent is key to our future and the scale of our organisation will give far  more career, training and development opportunities for all our staff.

Our Acute Medical Service is looking for a passionate and caring Staff Nurses to join their bright and friendly team.

The Acute Medical Unit is an assessment and admissions unit for acutely unwell patients. We treat emergency admissions from the A&E department and take direct referrals from GPs. Patients receive medical assessment and treatment before being admitted to the hospital for further treatment or discharged home.

We have an ambulatory care area where patients referred from their GP are triaged (assessed to determine the severity of their condition) and we have a ward area where acutely unwell patients are cared for.

We treat non-operable medical conditions. Most commonly we treat patients with chest pain and heart arrhythmias, stroke, respiratory conditions, unstable diabetes, gastro-intestinal conditions and oncology emergencies. We also care for patients with social and psychological problems before they are admitted or discharged to suitable places of care.

We have a senior nurse in charge of every shift who is responsible for coordinating patient care and bed allocation. This involves liaising with other departments and health care professionals in order to treat patients as quickly and efficiently as possible.

We have a dedicated team of qualified nurses and health care assistants who work in our fast moving environment to retain a high level of all round patient care.

Southend-On-Sea is an exciting place to live, work and enjoy life. Just under an hour from London and Europe (either by rail or air). Southend and the surrounding area is vibrant and cosmopolitan. Local schools have an excellent reputation including 4 Grammars. The nearby seaside provides a pleasant backdrop as well as opportunities for fun or relaxation. The attractive nearby town of bohemian Leigh-On-Sea provides an alternative location for many professionals to settle and wind down after work.
