Here at Southend University Hospital we strive to provide high quality care for every patient, every time.

We would be nothing without our staff. So it goes without saying that when it comes to recruiting new team members, we're looking for the best. We encourage staff to be innovative, to challenge the "as is" and to always put patients first.

We want staff who will live our trust values every day.

Care with compassion, Working together, Professional and accountable

Three mid and south east Essex Acute trusts are operating within a rapidly changing, challenging but very exciting time of whole system reformation. The Trusts are in partnership as a fast developing hospital network currently comprising of Southend University Hospital NHS FT, Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Mid Essex Hospital NHS Trust (the Group). Over the next few years, through working together and in partnership with the Essex Success Regime (ESR) programme, they will define the future of care for the population of mid and south Essex.

As part of this acute trust collaboration we are redesigning our hospitals to ensure we meet rising demand with the best quality services. The Pharmacy Department is at the forefront of our service redesign and one of the first departments within ESR to offer the opportunities for developing standardised systems across the three hospitals, re-designing new and ongoing services as the clinical configuration changes in line with the Carter Report. This is all being led by a new chief pharmacist working in partnership across the group.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, innovative clinical pharmacist wishing to develop their leadership skills and clinical knowledge in this newly established post.

The successful applicant will lead on the provision of day to day clinical pharmacy services to the Admissions Unit, providing expert pharmaceutical knowledge and advice to the admissions team. This will include MDT working within admissions, helping to improve patient care through effective medicines reconciliation and medicines optimisation. The role will also include ensuring protocols and guidelines are in line with local and national objectives to ensure cost-effective and safe prescribing within the department.

As part of the role, the postholder will contribute to the newly formed clinical pharmacy service to the Admissions Unit (encompassing Acute Medical Unit, Surgical Assessment Unit and a soon to be developed Frailty Assessment Unit) at Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which will involve working 1 in 4 weekends, a weekly late shift, and the rest of the week from 9am – 5.10pm. These shifts will allow for a good work-life balance. As a brand new role in part of a brand new initiative within Southend Hospital, there will be scope to shape the service to maximise benefits for patients and staff alike.

The post-holder will have excellent communication and negotiating skills working closely with patients and multiprofessional teams throughout the Admissions Unit. They will be able to work under pressure and alone with excellent prioritisation skills.

The post-holder will ideally be (or working towards being) a qualified independent prescriber having achieved a minimum of a postgraduate diploma in pharmacy practice.

In return for your hard work and commitment we will give you the opportunity to develop your skills as a clinical practitioner in a friendly structured environment supported by an excellent team. As a senior clinical pharmacist, you will be expected to support education and training of more junior staff including pre-registration pharmacists.

Southend Hospital is the first in Essex to implement electronic prescribing, using the JAC system, and we are at the forefront of developing and enhancing this system within the NHS. With excellent communication skills, you will play a key role in ensuring the admissions speciality derives maximum benefit from e-Prescribing and the opportunities it provides to deliver true medicines optimisation.

Southend-On-Sea is an exciting place to live, work and enjoy life. Just under an hour from London and Europe (either by rail or air), Southend and the surrounding area is vibrant and cosmopolitan. Local schools have an excellent reputation and the nearby seaside provides a pleasant backdrop as well as opportunities for fun and relaxation. The attractive nearby bohemian town of Leigh-On-Sea provides an alternative location for many professionals to settle and wind down after work.
